Durango, Colorado
« on: February 09, 2024, 04:22:35 PM »
Gonna be moving out there in a few months for a job. Any spots in or around there? I'm from the East Coast and have never been out west before, but looks to me from my Google searches like its a bit of a sparsely populated area. Any help would be appreciated.

There’s a gnarly looking park in Aztec, NM. Google says it’s a 45 minute drive

Its not sparsley populated. Durango is a size-able town with a college, downtown area etc. Theres probably some spots around there. But it doesnt matter really, youre just going to end up getting into mountain biking and snowboarding anyways.

Like skating wise? Transition, banks, ditches, stuff like that.

Purgatory is great for both.
Def go ride Wolf Creek when its dumping, especially early season. Most snow in Colorado

Damn wish I had seen this earlier, I just moved from Durango after living there for ten years. For skating, the best skatepark around is in Ignacio, 25-30 minute drive away. The local Durango park isn’t bad though, it grew on me after awhile. Lots of nice people and the youngns are pretty cool (mostly). And there’s a curb and some bumps/boobs. Yeah mountain biking is the move around there. Horse gulch trails are my favorite in town rips, but nearby Phil’s world is the shit. Purgatory is a pretty fun resort for snowboarding, but ticket prices are fucked. Mad log jibs hidden across the whole mountain if that’s your thing. It’s a great town that I’m gonna miss, especially in the summer. Get a towny bike, ride to the park, jump in the river, get a beer. Easy, mellow living (albeit expensive rent). Best street skating nearby is in Farmington NM, hour drive south. Spots galore. Durango street skating is….not great. I’ve done it, a lot, but you gotta really want it and get creative on shit spots (some good hill bombing on the north side though). Fort Lewis college has some cool spots (student union) and the best ledges in town nearby at the amphitheater. East of town is a little suburb called 3 springs that has a strip of ledges, stairs, gaps, rails. In my experience it’s a bust except on Sundays. Don’t sleep on taco boy while you’re at 3 springs, great burritos/salsa bar. Home slice pizza is trash, go to j Bo’s. Taco libre is the downtown taco spot. El Moro for date night (best cocktails). Get a purple fucker at the roadhouse. Get chlamydia at the ranch. Heckle the tourists. Enjoy.
