“Get paid” arguements aside, I’m really puzzled by society’s approval of starbux as a whole. It’s still junk food, it’s killing small business and it’s corpo AF.
I worked for a specialty coffee roaster from like 2004-2008, right before the whole third wave kicked off, but during the time Starbucks were showing up everywhere. We would see people sitting in our cafe keeping count of how many customers we got in an hour, assuming them to be 'undercover' starbucks scouts trying to determine if it was worth it to open another spot near us. I asked my boss, the owner, what he thought about starbucks pulling the same shit like walmart did, going into a neighborhood and driving out local businesses. To my surprise, my boss was all for starbucks getting huge. He said it would benefit all coffee shops because it would turn more people onto coffee and some subset of those would get really into it and then seek out better coffee. It made sense, and I'm not saying all small batch roasters would agree with him, but it was interesting to hear.
