Air travel: carry-on or stow away?
« on: February 28, 2008, 04:53:31 PM »
While traveling by airplane are you allowed to bring your board on as carry-on or do you need to take off the trucks.......or maybe go as far as checking it in as luggage?

most airlines won't let you carry it on, sometimes you can get away with it, but it's usually not worth trying. what i always do is- i take off the trucks, wrap the board up with clingfilm and strap it under my venture bag. i find that stops a lot of condensation from warping your board.
i've never had a damaged board with flying

I've flown to NY twice on Delta post 9/11, and both times I've just carried it on and was never even asked about it, and both times it was a pain in the ass. Even if you got your board strapped on your backpack backwards so the graphics' against the backpack and the wheels/trucks are part of the bag mass, it makes your backpack 2 inches too thick to stow away in the overhead compartment, both times I ended up just flying with my backpack on the floor between my, what felt like, styraphome packaged legs. It was nice not worrying about my board getting lost or stolen in transit, though. I guess that's the draw.

So if you've got a skate pack and really want to not lose your board in transit, just never take your board off your bag, run it through the tredmill xray thing like it's a non-issue, and never ask whether or not it's allowed, and most likely there won't be any confrontation about it, unless you struggle to fit your shit in the over-head and clog up traffic while people are trying to seat themselves, anyway.
I rarely venture into classic slap and the one time I do it I find a guy getting his dick eaten by a dolphin.

Over the summer I flew to Laguardia NYC from Chicago Midway on ATA. Four of my friends and myself carried on our boards, no questions asked, no hassles. But we had to put em in the overhead storage. I'd recommend checking their website or calling ahead, actually yeah call cuz when I went on the website it was confusing as hell. They might try to slap on some ridiculous oversize luggage fee, depending on what airline you're taking.

thanks for the input.  i'm flying overseas on china airlines.  i thought i'd give this a try since there are always people trying to stash ridiculously huge items in the overhead compartments but i guess there'd be less hassle by strapping it onto the check in luggage.  i'm just hoping, fucking hoping, the baggage inspectors won't fuck me over.

Wow I didn't think you could keep it with you. Maybe there were different rules on your flight, but when I brought mine on they made me put it in the overhead. It was really stupid, too, because she asked if I wanted it up there, instead of telling me that I had to put it up there. I hate when people do that, but at least she was nice about it.
