Ankle Injury?
« on: November 04, 2010, 07:25:33 PM »
A month ago I rolled my ankle pretty bad.  I was on crutches for a week becuase at first the doctors thought it was broken.  But when I went back to the ortho a week later they said it looked like a sprain instead.  Now, after three weeks of excercises everyday to try to rehad my ankle and regain the moblilty it still hurts when I roll my ankle over just standing on the ground.  I dont really have much experience with ankle injuries, so i was wondering if this is just because of a loss of mobility, or if it is still damaged and it still needs longer to heal.  And if you think I Should skate on it or not.  Any answers as soon as possible would be appreciated,  I have a skate trip with some friends coming up in like a week and a half and was wondering if I should back out of going becuase of my ankle.

Thanks,

lem

If you were able to walk on it with a bearable pain, it's not a terrible sprain, probably average. If the pain was far too much to walk, you done fucked up. I rolled my ankle in March, tore two ligaments completely apart, and there is still pain with certain motions. After a month in a boot, a month of physical therapy, and a couple months of minimal skating. I'm still nowhere near happy with how I'm skating, I don't think I'll be able to skate the same again. You need to give it as much time as you can to heal, ankle ligaments are some of the most fucked parts of our body, and it takes forever to heal. I'm assuming since they thought it was broken, you have a bad sprain, so you probably have a long time before it'll feel close to 100%. I'd say nay on the skate trip. but you can risk it if you want.

You'd actually had been better off if it was a bone injury. I've fractured my ankle four times and this may I tore ligaments in it. My ankle is still not 100% from the ligament injury, in the past fractures have never taken this long me to heal. It's not that I haven't improved since may, I'm skating again but it's still stiff on certain motions. I was told by the doctors it could take up to 6 months for me to be back 100% and right now it feels like I've got 80% mobility. So if they're saying you have a soft tissue injury the best advice would be to R.I.C.E. for the first few weeks and then hot/cold water alternating submergion. Don't push yourself because you could strain healing ligaments. Soft tissue is finicky.

You paid attention in health class! It's good advice though. Sprains are a bitch. I had one that kept me out of skating for nearly a whole summer. I rolled it 3 days in to my summer vacation and didn't feel right on it again until late August.

Try to rest until your trip comes because sprains fucking suck. Also stretch your ankle, do some mild workouts, rotations, you know. It's gonna hurt but it's more realistic to become tolerant to the pain than to actually have it heal in that amount of time.
