Which era would you like to try to go pro in?
« on: April 22, 2020, 11:30:01 AM »
For example if you rule at pool skating you would choose to go back in time to the early to mid 80s and whoop everyone's ass and become a legend.

I'd choose 1993 because of very low impact- small stairs skated up and down, ledges, mellow lines with lotsa flatground tricks.

No era at all.  Any of it is too gnarly and more than just skating for fun.  Theres been only a handful who were able just to skate for fun at a high pro level and you cant be Tom Penny.

This is probably particular to when I started skating, which was 1995. That era of filming video parts, traveling with teams, no social media, appeals to me if the focus is just on the lifestyle . I was too young then be aware of political thoughts or lifestyle viewpoints that looking back now are foolish.

Then again being pro now does allow for more of an individual to do their own thing in terms of access to eyes and minds through those social media outlets. Then again, the content machine never stops.

I always thought Tom Penny's story was a magical one, similar to Kenny Reed. Just dropping gems of footage and then disappearing, but the legend of the skater continuing.

If I could time travel, the early days. Imagine pulling up to a contest with a popsicle deck being able to do tricks not yet invented. Doing a Cab in Cab’s face long before he even thought of it. You’d be literally painting skateboard groupies with semen.

Mid-late 1980's, for sure.  Guys like Hawk, Hosoi and Gator were gods on Earth and treated like rock stars wherever they went.  Board sales were through the roof, tricks like the McTwist and Rocket Air were being invented, and the music was great.  Plus, there were so many low-budget jump ramp contests set up in shopping center parking lots and the whole atmosphere just had such a rad party vibe.  That's the era I first became aware of skateboarding and got my first set-up and it'll always be my favorite.

91-92. So many new tricks being invented a and it was pretty low impact. there was no money and no one was paying attention so you could put out a couple rad parts and then bail. like Ocean Howell or Jovantae Turner. That would be my ideal career

The tiny wheel, pressure flip era where everyone went super slow and skated flat. I'm being serious.

Few things get me as hyped to skate as Ray Barbee in Ban This. I'd love to be pro in an era when you could get paid to have fun rather than risking your life/future for energy drink money.

I’d be a mid-80s street pro like Tommy G. Ollies and powerslides were enough to get a Powell check. Throw a no comply or horrendous looking kickflip or a super ugly boardslide on a curb in and you’re printing money. Just gotta get there before Jason Lee shows up and changes everything.

Right now. You don't have to film a full part. Dress goofy but unoriginal. Copy and do abd. Peeps just gotta like and follow. Film you opening boxes whatever. Hell you can even be a pedo on braille. Opportunity is limitless.

This was the first skate video I ever saw and his part/style stood out to me so much. It still gets me stoked to just go out and be on my board to this day.

Exactly. I wouldn't be pro no matter the era unless I just invented it myself

If Justin Roy was able to get a pro board I should of at least of been able to get a guest model of I was at my 2012/13 peak in 2010
I'm going to argue that Placebo owes their entire career to a Canadian dude's skate video part. Appleyard should be getting royalties for this shit.
