Girl - Phawt vs. Couch shape
« on: May 28, 2020, 09:01:54 AM »
Has anyone tried out either? I'm thinking of either grabbing a Simon Bannerot or Rick Howard Couch or a Cory Kennedy Phawt with my next paycheck. What are they like? Pros and Cons of each? Worth it?

I've had both. Both super fun shapes. The CK Phawt has a 14 3/4" Wheel base and the Couch is 13 7/8", I think. So they feel very different. The Couch shape is too short for my taste but has been really fun for flat ground fun.

I've had both the phawt and the love seat (same as the couch but only 9" at the widest point). Aside from the WB difference the phawt has a lot less flat on the tail and is also rounder (like a traditional popsicle) on that end. Also, the taper on both is a little different, with the phawt being wider towards the back and the loveseat/couch being wider towards the center/front.

Both are great, functional shapes. Since I mostly skate flatground and curbs, I've kind of come to love the loveseat more but would def rock the phawt if I were more of a transition skater. That might also be because I'm pretty tall, but even so the loveseat doesn't feel short or anything.

I currently have a Girl 9" love seat set up, and absolutely love it. That short wb paired with Ventures is damn near perfect for me. I am going to do the couch shape next after reading good reviews on here.

Used the Couch with 169s, axles stick out on the back truck a tiny bit. Fun shape and worked well with the Indys. Magic carpet with 159s should be fun, too. Unfortunately, it cracked after skating flat ground a few times. Someone pointed out in another thread that poor landings put a lot of stress on the board with this shape, however the wood felt cheap compared to the BBS and HLC decks I am usually riding.

Personally I'd stick to 159, 151s or 6.1s on the 9.25 couch. Would love to try another one with Ventures this time.

6.1s on the loveseat are perfect IMO I always go back to that setup

Couch shape and Ace 66 (af1) here. Not the ideal combination if you don't like very very sketchy and responsive everything. They're really good boards and fun shapes though. Im saving my board for later and put back my 14.375wb board for now.

If I were to purchase the Love Seat with Venture 6.1, should I go for cast or forged baseplates?

Forged push out the wheelbase, but the couch has a small wb anyway, so I figured it wouldn't be a big deal. Plus the smaller weight with a wider board would maybe strike a nice balance.

Interested to hear some thoughts.

I have a Cory love seat as my cruiser atm and I love the shape. Will definitely have one in rotation for a long, long time. I have 151 Thunder hollows with it. Last photo is an old pic when it was new.

Looks more like a Phawt than Love Seat?

I’ve never seen a Phawt in person and bought this board advertised as a Love Seat. They may have got it wrong! Help!

That's a Phawt. Rad shape but way longer wheelbase at 14.75"

Cool! That’s one of the things I like most about it, it feels long. I don’t really check for wheelbases or stuff like that. I’m a size 12 and it feels nice with room to move on it. I am bummed on the shop sending it to me.

No one I know has had either board before so I’ve been telling them it’s the love seat shape haha. Doh.

Thanks for the info!

No prob. I love that shape also. (Also have size 11.5 / 12 feet) Its really really close to the Cardiel 9.18 Huffer shape if you want to try something similar with BBS wood.

Never really looked too hard at Crailtap boards, but at least (as was posted in the Woodshop thread - thanks @Chatbot) that Shapes guide is a great help:

https://crailtap.com/shapes

Almost need to add vs. Love Seat too to this thread, going by the current info, but I guess people are more used to the main two shapes, with Love Seat really only being a 9" version of Couch, as it says in the info.

https://crailtap.com/shapes/#phawt

Phawt
(G041) • 9.125″ × 32.625″

Width:9.125″
Length:32.625″
Wheelbase:14.75″
Nose:6.9375″
Tail:6.7375"

https://crailtap.com/shapes/#couch

Couch
(G048) • 9.25″ × 32″

Width:9.25″
Length:32″
Wheelbase:13.875″
Nose:7.125″
Tail:6.8″

https://crailtap.com/shapes/#love-seat

Love Seat
(G055) • 9″ × 32″

Width:9″
Length:32″
Wheelbase:13.875″
Nose:7.125″
Tail:6.8″

I can definitely see the Huffer shape in the Phawt version now when I look at all three of them.

Thanks so much y’all.

Fuck. Now I’m gonna be looking for the other 2 shapes to buy now haha.

Although the Cards board sounds nice. I have had an AH in a few years.

I had the same dilema between the loveseat/Couch and ended up buying one of each. Both are great but the Couch works better for me.

As mentioned here Couch + Venture 6.1 a match made in heaven.

No worries. I’ve been looking ever since the “I’d move to Australia for them” comment. Made me laugh and know how keen you are.

I’ll find a US10. I’m on it.  It’s good to do things for random people and not want anything in return.
