Favorit Painters ?
« on: April 01, 2013, 09:58:19 PM »
So  I was watching Basquiat the other day and got me thinking about how many good painters ive been missing out on .

So lets say maybe we pick one painter we really like , post maybe minimum 3 paintings of the dude and why you like them so much.
Wiki links and other stuff would be cool too if you feel like putting in extra effort

Morris Louis

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_Louis

I saw the first paintings of Louis at a museum in copenhagen . They outlining frames were all in bright colors with almost
all of the painting in white / untuched . the simplicity of it at the same time as making it beutiful just was very amazing

been looking up stuff on the dude ever since

Zdzislaw Beksinski.

I'm not particularly good at talking about art. I just think his paintings are so badass. Dark as Hell, creepy shit that makes me feel infinitely small and helpless. His stuff is surreal, but the locations and subjects in the paintings often seem tangible, like they really do exist in some other world. Nightmare material.

OP: You should check out Jules Olitski, Helen Frankenthaler, and Clifford Still.

It's strange how after studying art history for over a decade I struggle at coming up with 3 favorite painters, similarly I would list 30 people as my favorite skateboarder unable to rank them.  So my list will be people I know coming up right now.

Michael Scoggins
I guess these are technically drawings.  He starts with a making an oversized piece of notebook paper about 7 feet tall and then often draws a school-aged doodle or text, usually with political undertones.  In person they definitely have a sculptural quality, on a screen they read as 8.5x11" scrap of paper.

Jim Lee
Very roughly constructed post-minimal(ish) paintings, again I appreciate them for their materiality and the peculiar decisions contained within.

Jamie Powell
My close friend Jamie has been making these cartoon-y cut canvas paintings for a few years now, they have an interesting push/pull quality of positive and negative space.

I dont have one because I'm an ignorant american.  Does Twist count? Should change it to favorite artist. Paint is a pretty narrow medium.

I guess if I had to pick one single favorite, it'd be Henri Matisse. I love his use of colour and playfullness, and a lot of women.

Allthough these are cut-outs...they're really cool

Just bought a poster of this, Gustav Klimt:

Also agree with whoever said Magritte:

Some of you have the same taste in art as my mom. Not trying to be a dick though, she's a great lady! Shouts to Mrs. Hanz.

In Keeping with Germans who aren't Jonathan Meese...

Daniel Richter

Albert Oehlen

Martin/'Werner' Kippenberger

Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter are more or less the 'Tony Hawk's' of German painting, so they go without saying.

Another German, Tim Eitel.

I have never been a huge fan, but these are poignant.
