OP: You should check out Jules Olitski, Helen Frankenthaler, and Clifford Still.
It's strange how after studying art history for over a decade I struggle at coming up with 3 favorite painters, similarly I would list 30 people as my favorite skateboarder unable to rank them. So my list will be people I know coming up right now.

Michael Scoggins
I guess these are technically drawings. He starts with a making an oversized piece of notebook paper about 7 feet tall and then often draws a school-aged doodle or text, usually with political undertones. In person they definitely have a sculptural quality, on a screen they read as 8.5x11" scrap of paper.

Jim Lee
Very roughly constructed post-minimal(ish) paintings, again I appreciate them for their materiality and the peculiar decisions contained within.

Jamie Powell
My close friend Jamie has been making these cartoon-y cut canvas paintings for a few years now, they have an interesting push/pull quality of positive and negative space.
