Out of fashion tricks
« on: January 12, 2018, 08:38:04 PM »
Lots of talk about trends on here, but what about those poor tricks that got left behind?

Just watched Peter Raffin's Creature rough cut. He does a fs 180 nosegrind and a halfcab crooked revert on a ledge, and it struck me that those two tricks were staples once but are sadly neglected nowadays.

Any others come to mind?

Muska flips and varial flips. Dunno if they've ever been cool though but at least they were both much more common in the late 90s.

Damn I left my bubbler at my parents house

I would not mind seeing more;

Fakie frontside crooked grinds (makes me think of LA schoolyards and mid 90s, both are good things)
Fakie frontside noseslides (easy trick, but often looks ganster)

I could go on without seeing too many more;

Pressure flips (Ellingtons was ok but just do an inward heelflip instead)
Muska flips (looks ugly, painful reminder of the late 90s and early 00s yellow shirt era)
Nollie crooked grinds down a handrail (was there a part in TWS In Bloom without this trick, expect for Trujillo?)
Nollie bs big spin down a gap (easy, boring, done to death by ugly amateur skateboarders in the early 00s)

The love for switch pop shuvs seems to have turned into a cult-like love for them. Very few appreciate them, but those that do, really do.

Yes, Gilbert does one over a stone pillar thing. They are the best looking trick because they always have a little sketch..

Oski does one down a small set at the local park here....right after the dude almost hits his face on the curb...so good..

   People aren't doing those frontside tailslide rewinds on ramps too much anymore.   Those back tails people would do on big banks has simmered down mostly.  You don't see a lot of slide and rolls anymore in ramps.  I used to be able to do them but my front foot slips of when I try to come in from them.  I can't do rock and rolls anymore either.  Can anyone do rock and rolls here give me a tip?

Hardflips go in and out of style. I think the rule right now is it's okay to do them over/into stuff but not cool to huck them down stuff?

Have fakie heelflips and Fakie FS Halfcab Heelflips always been out of fashion or are they just hard for most people?

I feel like the front tail 270 has finally died out, and that's a good thing

Cab front nose and hardflip front nose were the hot ledge tricks of the late 90s, and it's been a while since I have seen either

Basically everything Brian Emmers did

Kickflip backside boardslide

Fakie flip tailslides

Oh man kf bs boardslides are such an ugly trick.   I feel like Jon Allie accidentally made those a thing in Dying to Live when he had that section where he kickflipped into every grind or slide.    Come to think of it, all flips into a boardslide are rough.

Varial flips have been experiencing a sort of resurgence as of late, at least from what I've noticed from seeing random Instagram clips here and there; been seeing them a lot more lately.
Also, as long as DGK and Brazil exists switch pop shuvs will never die out.

I feel like switch big heels were the pinnacle trick for am huckers in the early 2000s.

  Billy Marks does one on a handrail along to a killers soundtrack that is super rad.

This trick was definitely a staple for the early 2000s. I don’t think I can name one video from that era where someone didn’t do that trick.

One trick that I really enjoy, but rarely see is a frontside tailslide popped out back to regular on a handrail a-la Heath Kirchart.

Wes recently did one of the best ever done, switch. But yeah, not as common as it was in the early 2000s.

I generally agree, but this part has both tricks and they look really good.
Edit: oddly enough, (perhaps not odd at all), this part has many of the tricks other people have mentioned

Kickflip bs/fs noseslides don’t get much love these days, I miss seeing those.

This. Shit peaked in 2002/3 and was fucking extinct by 2004. Still plenty of nollie crooks and varials in video parts and out in the wild but shifty flips feel like a distant memory.
